Carsten Nicolai (*1965, Chemnitz, Germany) is a contemporary artist and musician based in Berlin who works simultaneously in visual and sonic media. Nicolai studied landscape design in Dresden. In his work he makes scientific phenomenons like sound and light frequencies perceivable for both eyes and ears. Influenced by science, Nicolai often works with mathematic patterns such as grids and codes, as well as error, random and self-organizing structures. He has been the subject of more than fifty international solo exhibitions since 1987.
His work is part of major collections including the Rubell Family Art Collection, Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig, Klingspor Museum Offenbach and Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst Gent. Nicolai performed as his alter ego Alva Noto at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou Paris and Tate Modern in London.
