Don van Vliet
Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart, *1941, Glendale, USA, †2010) was a songwriter and contemporary artist. He conducted a rotating ensemble called the Magic Band, with whom he recorded 13 studio albums between 1964 and 1982. Van Vliet sustained a cult following as highly significant and incalculable influence on an array of new wave, punk and experimental rock artists. His painting style is described as modern, primitive, abstract expressionism as well as “outsider art” and is influenced by the CoBrA painters.
His work has been displayed at the Museum of Modern Art New York, Museum Waldorf Bielefeld, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, Michael Werner Gallery New York, Barbican Centre London, Lelong Zurich and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
