Chris Newman, Paintings (and Drawings)

Chris Newmans neue Arbeiten sind „on the edge“. Sie sind alles: Malerei, Zeichnung, Verkrustung, direkter Ausdruck der Seele. Einer guten Seele mit scharfer Zunge. In seiner aktuellen intensiven Beschäftigung mit Paul Gauguin lässt ihn nichts kalt, dessen Blick auf die Welt absorbiert und transkribiert er, macht ihn zu einem Newman Blick und trifft den Betrachter hart. Newman lässt seine Bilder sprechen. Schon im Prozess des Malens gesteht er ihnen ihr Eigenleben zu, lässt sie bestimmen. Richter über Leben oder Tod seiner Bilder zu sein erlaubt sich allerdings der Künstler selbst. Er entscheidet, ob sie ein Leben verdient haben, gut genug sind, den Unwissenden zu vermitteln, was es zu sagen gibt. Mit denen, die nicht stark genug sind, geht Newman radikal ins Gericht, übermalt sie mit Gesso und macht sie zu Geistern, die in den neuen Bildern darauf hier und da partiell durchschimmern.
Seine Malerei ist eine andere Dimension. Was zunächst zart daher kommen mag entfaltet alle Spektren unserer Gefühlswelt und ist in der Lage ins Herz zu treffen. Von Brutalität und Aggression über pure Energie und Liebe hallen diese Arbeiten in jedem Fall nach.
Chris Newman hat international bereits in zahlreichen Institutionen ausgestellt. Unter vielen anderen im Märkisches Museum in Berlin, Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, Kolumba Museum Köln, Serpentine Gallery, London, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York City, Performance Space, Sydney. Sein Werk ist Teil bedeutender Sammlungen, wie dem Museum of Modern Art, New York, Museum Ludwig, Köln, Kolumba Museum Köln und der Kunstsammlung Deutscher Bundestag, Berlin.

Chris Newman’s new works are “on the edge”. They are everything: painting, drawing, crusting, direct expressions of his soul. A good soul with a sharp tongue. Nothing leaves him cold in his current intensive engagement with Paul Gauguin. He absorbs and transcribes Gauguin’s view of the world, turns it into a Newman view and hits the spectator hard. Newman lets his paintings speak. Even during the process of painting he gives his works their own independent existence, lets them decide. Nonetheless, he remains the judge over the life and death of his pieces. He decides if they deserve a life, if they are good enough to convey what there is to say to the ignorant. Newman judges those that aren’t good enough very harshly, painting them over with gesso and making them into ghosts that shimmer through here and there in the new works.
His painting is another dimension. What seems to come along rather gently unlocks the whole range of our emotions and is able to strike the heart. From brutality and aggression to energy and love, all of his works reverberate.
Chris Newman has exhibited widely both in German and internationally – Including in the Märkisches Museum in Berlin, the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, the Kolumba Museum Cologne, the Serpentine Gallery, London, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York City, and the Performance Space, Sydney. His work has been included in major collections, such as Museum of Modern Art, New York, Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Kolumba Museum Cologne and Kunstsammlung Deutscher Bundestag, Berlin.
